What does it mean to be a disciple?

So this is the title of Via, Project 3.

What does it mean to be a disciple? I think you will agree, gaining an understanding of what that really means, will take all of our earthly lifetimes.

When I think disciple, I immediately think in biblical, new testament context and of course of Jesus's disciples. But actually, as a friend pointed out to me, each and every one of us is a disciple meaning a learner, of something. Living out our lives, based on or inspired by something or someone, whether it be a faith in many gods, such as hinduism or no gods or God, i.e atheism, whether it be a celebrity or political view, we all lead our lives in reverence/respect to something.

In a book I am currently reading, one of the characters who is asking this very same question, I think manages to answer it herself when she asks:

"So they're going to be called together to learn the violin, and then they'll be sent out to play the master's kind of music in the master's way?"

In case you are lost, she is basically using the analogy of a master violinist who apprentices disciples to learn to play, who are then sent out to gather new violinists who want to learn to play the master's way too.

Isn't that wonderful, I think you could almost think of Jesus as our master of living, a master of the greatest symphony every made, he calls us together to learn how to join in playing it, we learn, we play, we hear the wonder of it. He then sends us out, to play it some more, and welcome others to join in the symphony - a tune that is literally from another world, another kingdom, another realm but which Jesus in his own special way has made possible to play here, now, presently, today.

Part of the process, as MClaren expands on in his book, is also encouraging us to compose more music in His tradition, or I like to think of it as more melodies to fit in the sympony - cuz we all have a unique harmony to contribute, do we not? I believe so, and trusting that the symphony is not complete, without the tune of you, and the harmony of me, the whistling of him, and the drumming of her, is half the challenge. Cuz that IS the truth, you and me were created to play this perfect tune of his. Our minds, bodies, souls are healed as we do - awesome, deep, TRUE.

In Him only, do we live and move and have our being.

TRUE, like you say. What a great muse to take into christmas. I can vouch that trying to live outside of him is like a prolonged dischord. We that were given ears to hear the tune and feel the harmonies!.

i hope you can enjoy your Christmas time and have a wonderful, heartfelt celebration of Him as well as a peaceful and real time with those around you.

see you in the New Year, looking forward to continuing with Via :)
